School Board Election Information

On November 3, 2020, Austin community members will be asked to elect three school board members for full 4-year terms. Additionally, there will be a vacancy for a 2-year term. Please see below for more information or contact Sharon Alms at 507-460-1900.

Filing For Candidacy

The School Board Filing Period is July 28, 2020 through 5:00 pm on August 11, 2020. Candidates must file an affidavit of candidacy with the school district and pay a $2 filing fee. Filing takes place in the District Office at Austin High School (enter door #3). Please bring identification as the affidavit of candidacy will be notarized. Each candidate will have to complete a campaign financial report no later than seven days after the election. This report indicates whether a candidate has either received $750 in campaign contributions or spent $750 on the election.

The filing of Affidavits of Candidacy for election by general or special election to the office of school board member is now open. Filing takes place at the District Office located in the NE corner of Austin High School. Please enter through door #3. The filing period will close on August 11, 2020 at 5:00 pm. On the Affidavit of Candidacy form, please indicate one of two options for Office Sought: school board candidate for the general election or school board candidate for the special election. At the general election on November 3, 2020, three members will be elected to the School Board for terms of four (4) years each, beginning the first Monday in January, 2021. Concurrent with the general election on November 3, 2020, a special election shall be held for the election of one (1) individual to fill a vacant seat on the School Board, the term of which will begin November 9, 2020 and expire on January 2, 2023. The filing fee is $2 which you may provide in person or pay conveniently at this link: https://austin.revtrak.net/candidate-filing-fee#/list. When your notarized Affidavit of Candidacy form and fee are filed, you will receive a copy of the Minnesota Campaign Manual, the Financial Report form, and the Certification of Filing form. The school district offers notary service.

Eligibility

Candidates must:
  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Be an eligible voter
  • Be a district resident for at least 30 days prior to election/appointment
  • Not be a convicted felon whose civil rights have not been restored

Vacancies

When filing, you would need to indicate which term you are running for. There are three (3) four-year terms and one (1) two-year terms on the ballot this year:
  • 2 year term - November 9, 2020 - January 2, 2023
  • 4 year terms - January 4, 2021 - January 5, 2025

Austin School Board Meeting Schedule

Regular monthly school board meetings are held the second Monday of each month at 5:30 pm. (Meeting times have been adjusted during COVID-19 period.) A second meeting or study session is typically held the fourth Monday of each month at 4 pm. In addition, each board member will be required to be active participants on a number of district committees which have varied meeting schedules. Committee assignments are completed each January.

Compensation

Compensation for school board members is $4,000 per year (paid bi-weekly) and $5200 per year for the chairperson.

AUSTIN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
STATE OF MINNESOTA

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the period of filing Affidavits of Candidacy for election by general or special election to the office of school board member of Independent School District No. 492 shall begin on July 28, 2020, and shall close at 5:00 p.m. on August 11, 2020.

The general election shall be held on November 3, 2020. At the general election, three members will be elected to the School Board for terms of four (4) years each, beginning the first Monday in January, 2021.

Concurrent with the general election on November 3, 2020, a special election shall be held for the election of one (1) individual to fill a vacant seat on the School Board, the term of which shall begin on November 9, 2020 and expire on January 2, 2023.

Affidavits of Candidacy are available from the School District clerk at the offices of Austin Public School District, District Office, 401 3rd Avenue NW, in the City of Austin. Please enter through door #3. The filing fee for either the general or special election is $2. A candidate for either the general or special election must be an eligible voter, must be 21 years of age or more on assuming office, must have been a resident of the school district from which the candidate seeks election for thirty (30) days before the election, and is not a convicted sex offender.

The Affidavits of Candidacy must be filed in the office of the School District clerk and the filing fee paid prior to 5:00 p.m. on August 11, 2020.
