APS and Generative AI

Generative Artificial Intelligence is changing the way we work, learn, and solve problems. At Austin Public Schools, we are embracing this innovative technology to enhance education and improve efficiency. As we explore AI’s potential, we remain fully committed to protecting our students' and staff's privacy, security, and well-being.

Systemic Adoption of AI at APS

At Austin Public Schools, we are committed to establishing a culture of AI integrity and digital responsibility. To guide our systemic adoption of AI, we are focusing on the following key documents and frameworks:

  1. District Strategic Plan: Provides overarching direction and aligns AI adoption with our educational and operational goals.
  2. Board Policies and Procedures: Ensure compliance and uphold accountability across all AI and digital initiatives.
  3. AI Governance Strategy: Outlines our approach to responsibly scaling AI, including ethical use and decision-making guidelines.
  4. Guiding Principles: Serve as the foundation for fostering innovation while maintaining security, equity, and transparency.

These resources collectively ensure that AI integration supports our mission to enhance learning, empower tomorrow's workforce, and responsibly elevate education.

This document guides our students, staff, and school communities on the appropriate and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI tools, in classroom instruction, school management, and systemwide operations.
Artificial intelligence refers to computer systems that are taught to automate tasks normally requiring human intelligence. "Generative AI" refers to tools, such as Bing Chat, ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney, and DALL-E, that can produce new content, such as text, images, or music, based on patterns they've learned from their training data.  This is made possible through "machine learning," a subset of AI where computers learn from data without being explicitly programmed for a specific task. Think of it as teaching a computer to be creative based on examples it has seen. While generative AI tools show great promise and often make useful suggestions, they are designed to predict what is right, which isn't always right. As a result, their output can be inaccurate, misleading, or incomplete. Generative AI has potential benefits for education and risk that must be thoughtfully managed.

AI Governance Strategy

Austin Public Schools' AI Governance Strategy outlines our core goals for adopting artificial intelligence responsibly. Focused on innovation, ethics, and security, it establishes clear policies, ensures data integrity, and promotes equitable access to AI tools. This framework empowers students, staff, and educators while safeguarding our digital environment.
