Mission and Vision
Our mission is to create a challenging learning community where students will be engaged in Science, Technology, Engineering, Fine Arts and Mathematics through an inquiry-based curriculum. Our vision is to build student leaders who will be successful in the 21st Century.

We will do this by facilitating student learning opportunities that utilize the engineering design process, integrate curriculum that is inquiry based, and expose students to the variety of technologies that exists today.

An emphasis on design and problem solving in the classroom will allow students to use trans-disciplinary tools for discovery and for developing solutions to problems that are open-ended. Such a classroom will give students an understanding of the relationships of all STEAM areas as they are used in the real world beyond the classroom walls. Instead of separating science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math into individual curriculum “silos,” STEAM can provide our students with the integrative tools of investigation and analysis. Consequently, a STEAM classroom shifts students away from learning isolated facts, to experience-based inquiry with opportunities for independent learning.

6th Grade Cancer Research Fundraiser
Hugs and Kisses Donation Feb 2014.jpgIJ Holton Student Council presented a check for $1,273.75 from the student Hugs & Kisses Campaign to the Hormel Institute.  This donation qualifies I.J. Holton School to get a Bronze Level ($1,000-$4,999) panel on the Donor Recognition Wall this spring when it undergoes an annual update.  Thank you to HyVee for the donation of candy kisses and to all the students and staff who purchased chocolate kisses for their classmates and staff members.

6th Grade Cancer Research Fundraiser
cancer_shirt.png6th graders from IJ Holton recently visited the Hormel Institute, and as a follow up are looking to raise funds to contribute to cancer research.  Students submitted t-shirt designs around the theme "Cancer Awareness Comes in Many Colors”, and the sixth grade is now taking orders for the winning design.  All profits will be donated to the Hormel Institute, and all orders are due Wednesday, March 26.  You may put any orders/payments in my mailbox.  To download the order form, click on the design to the right.

750 Holton students participated in the first annual STEAM Expo on Wednesday, January 29th.  Students participated in one of three categories:
  1. Competitive science fair project
  2. Non-competitive science fair project
  3. Engineering challenge
150 third and fourth grade students also competed with science fair projects.  Awards continue to be tabulated and will be announced as they come in.
The Hormel Institute's Tim Ruzek presented two awards:
    • Riley Haugen, Grade 5 - "Fiber in Kids"
    • Laura Stahl, Grade 5 - "Microbiology"
Congratulations to all our participants!

Our New Cello
The Holton music department would like to thank the music boosters for generously donating a brand new ½ size cello.  This instrument is very much needed, as the orchestra program is experiencing a high number of kids joining this year.  Since most fifth graders are not done growing yet, the need for smaller instruments was very high this year.  Pictured here is Orchestra director Brenda Radloff, along with the first student to play the new instrument, Kaylee Johnson.  Thank you boosters!

Special Theater Guest
On Wednesday, January 22 the 6th grade general music classes hosted a special guest. Lindsey Williams is a theater professor and director at Riverland College. She shared with the students her experience in directing theater and what it takes to put on a performance from start to finish. 6th grade general music students are currently immersed in a musical theater unit and will continue their study throughout the next month.

Respectful, Responsible, Safe
Holton students have earned over 15,000 SPARK tickets during the 1st semester at I.J. Holton school for being RESPECTUL, RESPONSIBLE, and SAFE.  ALL students were treated to a free bag of popcorn after lunch on Friday, January 17.  30 lucky students had their names drawn and were treated to lunch at HyVee on Friday, January 24.  Thanks, Todd Hepler and HyVee staff for recognizing the TERRIFIC students we have at I.J. Holton Intermediate School!  See pictures and videos of the HyVee lunch in the link below.
